DES, the world's first independent system to use smart algorithms for eliminating glass container forming defects. This system gives clear step-by-step instructions to the glass forming machine operator, memorizes actions taken, analyses decisions made and distributes them to all production lines, plants, and countries where the company operates. DES can be used with any glass container forming machine type and forming process. With DES, glass forming machine operators can fix defects quicker and more effectively.

Why should Glass Container Manufacturers use DES?

Today in 2020, the average defect rate is about 10%, which presents an enormous cost to glass producers. Thanks to the available inspection technology most of the defects can be automatically detected and rejected in real time during production, but this does not decrease the defect level or increase quality. With DES, the glass maker can reduce the defect rate by at least 50%.

DES - THE GAME CHANGER FOR GLASS CONTAINER MANUFACTURERS

Life with DES, how it works?

The glass making process runs 24/7, at any moment an operator will have to deal with a forming defect. For this reason, operators need someone on their side that is available 24/7. DES does not require any sleep and with this is available for the operator at any time; it seems the ideal partner.
There are effectively two scenarios that happen during defect rectification when using DES.
1) The operator executes the steps recommended by DES in the quest to fix the defect. In the best case one of the solutions(steps) provided fixed the defect.
2) The operator exhausted all steps provided by DES without fixing the defect. However, by following and executing each step the operator came up with another possibility which finally fixed the defect.
At the end, the defect was fixed without calling upon a specialist, and the information of how the defect was fixed is captured within the system.
Production engineers and management can use the DES analytic tool to understand what defects were fixed with what action. This will enable the plant to find engineering solutions required to prevent defects in the first place.
With DES there is no more excuse to have forming defects running on the line.

How to prepare DES for my company?

At the beginning the company will provide the system with their defect list and available knowledge about the defects. Companies with different language regions translate the content within the system to the required language, without the loss of meaning and traceability. No matter where the glass plant is located and what language is being spoken in that plant, it now is connected to the company’s fundamental knowledge base.

How to keep DES running effectively?

Thanks to the smart algorithms used in DES, it requires minimal human effort to keep information relevant and to be able to trace what action was taken by an operator. As time goes on and usage increases, it will require less interaction to correct and possible translate content.

What can be achieved using DES?

With DES any glass manufacturing company can empower the I.S. forming machine operator to fix defects 24/7, no need to wait for the production specialist or external expert to come to the plant to fix forming defects. This not only reduces the time between defect detection and fixing, but it also provides traceability of the actions that were taken to fix a defect. Thanks to the analytic tool the user can quickly understand some interesting points, such as;
• How often was DES used to fix a defect;
• What are the most common fixes;
• Is there a difference in defects between products or even I.S. forming machine type.

TECHNICAL FEATURES OF DES

Centralized Content

The system keeps all the content centralised and tracible. Standard operating procedures can be created and all deviations and revisions are tracked.

Multilanguage

The unique ID-code system enables the use of different languages, without losing the connection to the created standard.

Global Exchange

Multiple production locations can exchange knowledge of newly found solutions within seconds.

Statistics & Reports

Visualisation tool to see how many defects per line, product and day have been fixed using DES.

Intelligent System

The smart algorithms take care to present the I.S. forming machine operator with the latest relevant solution to fix defects.

Operator Client

The production floor app provides a secure access for the operator at the I.S. forming machine.

CONTENT IN DES

To provide full flexibility and to give glass manufacturers the ability to create their own unique content, DES is structured to handle the content in two ways.

Standard Content

The system is made available with structured content of more than 120 different glass container forming defects that can be used as is or edited by the user without the need to ask APEGG’s permission. Providing the system with content helps the user to quickly populate DES with content generating immediate benefits for the company.

User Content

Glass Manufactures can use their own phraseology to bring the knowledge alive without losing standard terminology. Companies can create their own defect list. Production specialists and operators have the possibility to share their experience online through the system. With this, the knowledge of the company about forming defects will grow rapidly as never before, and it takes minutes rather than years to spread newfound knowledge.

DES provides a structure to store, manage and use the following content:
• Forming defect image
• Glass defect name
• Defect description
• Defect detection in bottles and jars
• Glass defect effect
• Defect cause (source)
• Defect prevention (remedies)
• Fix it (elimination)
